Justin Webb Learning Center

The Justin B. Webb Learning Center is a facility designed to help members improve their computer skills in a classroom environment. The facility features twenty computers for student use, with class instructional material projected onto a large screen. All computers have the latest operating system, basic software, and a high-speed Internet connection. New flat-panel monitors were installed in May 2005. Areas of instruction include basic and intermediate computer skills, the Internet and email, and a variety of specific applications. All teachers are volunteer members. Description
Picasa is a fast and easy way to import, organize, edit, view, and share your digital photos. Learn to import your photos from digital cameras, flash/external hard drives, CDs and/or memory cards. You can organize your photos in a variety of ways. Several basic photo editing functions, including color enhancement, red eye reduction and cropping, to name a few, are included in Picasa. You can create photo captioned slide shows and screen savers. Photos can also be prepared for external use, such as for e-mailing, sending to a printing service on-line, and other applications. You will learn many of the above features in this beginner's class. Picasa 3, the latest version of this program from Google, is available to download free from the Internet. 
Pre-requisite: Completion of Basic Computer Skills or good computer skills.

Photoshop Elements 7 is a photo editing software program for working with digital photographs and/or photos that have been scanned into a computer and saved in digital format. This class is intended for the student who is very PC knowledgeable and is familiar with Photoshop Elements and its capabilities. You need to have the program on your home computer in order to do the weekly homework.

This class is for beginners who want to learn how to use a computer, and/or those who want to review or reinforce their basic computer skills. The class teaches the basic components and functions of the computer, the Microsoft Windows XP Operating System, and basic skills in fundamental applications such as word processing. The Internet and e-mail will be introduced. The goal of this class is to give the student a capability to understand and to use the computer as a tool. There is no pre-requisite for this class  only a desire to learn to use a computer.

This class is taught in Korean, and is specifically for Korean residents in Laguna Woods Village. It is designed for beginners who want to learn how to use a computer, and/or those who want to review or reinforce their basic computer skills. Information (knowledge) will be presented followed by extensive hands-on (practice) sessions. Differences between English and Korean Operating system and software programs including multi-language pack will be covered. Windows XP, Internet and E-Mail use will be the main topics. There is no pre-requisite for this class – only a desire to learn to use a computer. The class enrollment is limited to 20 people; first-come, first-serve basis. Description

This class is not for beginners. We start with a brief explanation as to how a computer works and why we have to do house cleaning of the hard drive.

  1. Before starting, back up the Restore point and back up of Registry.
  2. Dump programs that are not needed.
  3. Clean up the System Tray of programs not needed at start up.
  4. Learn Processes and how to identify them and turn them off.
  5. Get rid of temp files.
  6. Clean up the rest of the hard drive using Disk Clean.
  7. Use the Disk Check and Defrag functions.
  8. Learn how to tweak Virtual memory.
  9. The Task Manager.
  10. Trouble shooting tools. Msinfo32.
  11. Event Viewer and Dr. Watson
  12. Questions and Answers.

PC Club Updates


In addition to classes, the Learning Center also hosts short Special Interest Group (SIG) learning sessions. These sessions focus on a particular subject of interest, do not require any enrollment and are free. SIG sessions are less formal and have open question-and-answer periods. SIG presenters include PC Club members who share their knowledge, experience, and interests, as well as selected outside sources.

The SIGs are held at the Justin Webb Learning Center. They are free of charge and do not require any pre-registration. Room capacity is 54. Please come early to ensure a seat.
