Famers Battle The Right To Sell To Builders Of Markham Homes
There is a battle going on right now that involves two different types of land in Markham and the results could have a large impact on the number of available Markham homes for sale and the values of others that are not on the market. The issue stems from farm land in the area that has increasingly been sold to real estate developers in order to build new subdivisions. This is nothing new and has allowed farmers a way to cash in on their land as its value increased.
The problem is that as more and more farmland disappears and is turned into homes food for cities needs to be trucked in from further and further away. Less local food is also being produced. This means that food costs continue to rise and there is an impact on the environment as more pollution is produced in order to bring in food from other areas.
In response to this the city of Markham has proposed the creation of a food belt that would prevent the sale of farmland in this area to real estate developers. While some farmers see this as a positive move that will protect the community others see it as a measure that will prevent them from converting their land into cash for homes and new real estate construction projects. This would effectively make their property, which would be worth quite a bit to a builder much less valuable. Many of these farmers have been picturing the sale of their properties as part of their retirement plan and now those dreams could be ploughed away.
